CHILDREN/TODDLER BOOK Peter Rabbit Songs and Rhymes
JACQUELINE WILSON Bad Girls
Bad Girls is Jacqueline Wilson's eighth title. Her previous books include The Suitcase Kid which won the 1993 Children's book Award, and Double Act, which won both the Smarties Prize and the Children's Book Award in 1995. Bad Girls deals lightly but sensitively with the terrible pain suffered by a 10-year-old girl when she becomes the victim of vicious bullying at school. When the over- protected, intelligent Mandy is cast out by her so called girl "friends" at school she takes up with trendy, cheerful, 14-year-old Tanya. Because Mandy reminds Tanya of her much-loved kid sister in care and because she too is lonely the two quickly become best friends. But Tanya's unhappy life has made her turn to petty crime and before long Mandy finds herself in deep waters. Bad Girls is a delightful and important book. Brightly written and amusingly illustrated by Nick Sharratt it deals very well indeed with difficult emotional and social issues.

MICHAEL CONNELLY Echo Park
'Connelly's plots are never straightforward, and he keeps us guessing until the exciting and bitter conclusion to this latest episode in a splendid series.' (Susanna Yager SUNDAY TELEGRAPH )
'...amid the excitements of his vertiginous plot, Connelly takes the time to consider whether Harry's determination to get his man is worth the sacrifices he makes.' (DAILY TELEGRAPH )
'This is Connelly doing what he does best: delivering a beautifully structured, richly atmospheric crime novel.' (Barry Forshaw EXPRESS )
'This is a skilfully structured, richly atmospheric addition to the series.' (Jessica Mann LITERARY REVIEW )
'This is LA Noir brought up to date. ... Connelly, the best in the hard-boiled business right now, sets the whole thing up slowly and magnificently until it explodes.' (Allan Laing THE HERALD )

JEFFREY ARCHER To Cut a Long Story Short
A Collection of Stories by Jeffrey Archer
Fraud, deceit, deception, lying, bankruptcy, infidelity: these are the recurrent themes that concern Jeffrey Archer in his fourth collection of short stories, To Cut a Long Story Short. Of the 14 stories gathered here, nine are asterisked as being "based on true incidents" but the whole collection is remarkable for the extent to which Archer's own chequered career finds echoes in his fiction. In "Crime Pays", Kenny Merchant--"that wasn't his real name, but then, little was real about Kenny" finds an ingenious loophole in the Data Protection Act to make a financial killing, while in "The Letter" a wife enjoys reading a kinky love letter from her lover (a well-known novelist) in front of her husband. Her lover recalls making love in "the loo at the Caprice" and fantasises about "being tied to a four-poster bed, with you standing over me in a police sergeant's uniform".
In one of the few stories that does not involve people conning one another, "The Grass is Greener", the moral of the story appears to be that the head of an international bank experiences more pain and personal turmoil than Bill the beggar who sits on the street outside. In "A Change of Heart", a racist white South African devotes himself to doing good for the black community after receiving a black man's heart following a near-fatal car accident. Archer's fans will undoubtedly enjoy this collection but other readers may find its relish for duplicity rather dubious or at best find its sentimental morality rather cloying.

JEFFERY DEAVER The Bone Collector
Reviews:
"A breakneck thrill-ride." – Wall Street Journal
"Unlike similar crime books, this focus only lightly on the torture scenes and creates tension through satisfying Sherlock Holmes-type detecting and the spunky personalities of the investigators. A fine thriller." – Midwest Book Review
"Deaver marries forensic work that would do Patricia Cornwell proud to a turbocharged plot that puts Benzedrine to shame." – Kirkus Reviews
"Exciting and fast-paced." – Peter Straub

JOHN GRISHAM The Broker
Before he was sent to federal prison for treason (among other things), Joel Backman was an extremely powerful man. Known as "the broker," Backman was a high roller--a lawyer making $10 million a year who could "open any door in Washington." That is, until he tried to broker a deal selling access to the world's most powerful satellite surveillance system to the highest bidder. When caught, Backman accepted prison as the one option that would keep him safe and alive, since the interested parties (the Israelis, the Saudis, the Russians, and the Chinese) were all itching to get their hands on his secrets at any cost. Little does he know that his own government has designs on accessing that information--or at least letting it die with him. Now, six years after his incarceration, the director of the CIA convinces a lame duck president to pardon Backman, and the broker becomes a free man--and an open target.
